From Jackson, we drive through Grand Teton National Park on the way to Yellowstone, taking in the majestic Teton Range and spotting wildlife such as moose, elk, coyotes, eagles and osprey. We stop at historic Jackson Lake Lodge to “water the horses,” and look for wolves and bears from the vantage point of the famous Jackson Lake overlook. Then on to Yellowstone!
We arrive late morning at world-famous Old Faithful Geyser Basin. On your own, you’ll spend time exploring the Yellowstone Caldera “supervolcano” and having lunch. Stroll on the Geyser Basin boardwalk amid the hot springs, where 25% of the world’s geysers reside. Visit the historical landmark Old Faithful Inn, which opened in 1904. Check out the new Visitor’s Center which features interactive displays for kids and adults, or watch a movie that takes you right inside of a geyser! Six restaurant options are available for lunch.
Then, we saddle back up in the van to see more mud pots and hot springs, while enjoying tales of Native American adventure, and learning about extremophiles and thermophiles as we make our way to the wondrous Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and the 308-foot Lower Falls. We’ll visit Lookout Point for what we think is the best view in the Park. Have your camera ready!
Next, we pass through Hayden Valley where the buffalo DO roam! A quick stop at the historic Lake Hotel on Lake Yellowstone, and we continue to look for wildlife viewing opportunities as we head south on the loop back to Jackson. We cover 260 miles on the day’s adventure, and arrive back in town around 6:30-7:00 p.m. You should also bring sunglasses, comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and an extra layer or jacket.
